The Elena Pattern

Patterns

A behavioral pattern exhibited by Elena Wagenmans in which she forms alliances with capable people, relies on them to build, and then discards them when they are no longer useful or begin to push back.

Documented Instances

Cinnamon Sipper

During Mobius, Cinnamon Sipper attempted to push Amy and Elena off the board. Elena convinced Amy to side with her. Together they fired Cinnamon. Amy was the instrument Elena used to remove the first threat.

Amy Zhou

At Taya, Amy built the entire product while Elena held the CEO title. When Amy reached her limit and left in November 2025, Elena changed her LinkedIn from "CEO + Co-Founder" to "CEO + Founder," removed Amy's name from the website, and gave press interviews that did not mention Amy's contributions.

Haley Mossmer

Haley Mossmer was hired as Founding GTM. She worked 12+ hour days, commuted from Los Altos, and conducted 60+ user interviews. Elena fired her after six weeks, telling her: "I don't know what you're doing with your time." The firing came the day after a new PM was confirmed.

Others

Elena also removed a marketing team, an iOS engineer, and an operations person named Matzah (who was working illegally on an expired visa from Belgium). By March 2026, Elena claimed "AI is better than hiring engineers."

The Pattern

  1. Recruit: Find someone technically capable or operationally useful.
  2. Rely: Let them carry the actual work. Take the public-facing role.
  3. Replace: When they push back, burn out, or are no longer needed, remove them.
  4. Rewrite: Adjust titles, websites, and narratives to minimize or erase their contribution.

Amy's Recognition

Amy recognized the pattern explicitly after connecting with Haley. Haley's experience confirmed that Elena's treatment of Amy was not personal or unique but structural.

March 9: "That's who Elena is. It's not personal. It's just how she operates."

The recognition does not eliminate the emotional impact. Amy continues to feel the sting of being erased. But she no longer attributes it to something she did wrong.

Significance

The Elena Pattern is important because it reframes Amy's departure from Taya. She did not fail. She was not insufficient. She was the second person in a repeating sequence. The pattern existed before her (Cinnamon) and continued after her (Haley, the marketing team, the iOS engineer, Matzah).
