Gui

People

Gui (Guilherme) is a Brazilian Stanford student in SymSys + CS coterm who Amy met on Hinge in May 2024. Phone: +1 (650) 433-6282. He lives at "The Garden" in SF. He takes escitalopram (SSRI). He is one year older than Amy.

The Arc

First message: "hey amy, gui from hinge here :) we should hangout." He was at Stanford Mirrielees, the same dorm complex Amy had lived in. Into improv, bossa nova, meditation, cybernetics. Flirty immediately: "i should kiss you before it's over then." Before even meeting in person: "can we hangout? you seem like the most interesting human ever."

The first in-person meetup was delayed by weeks because Gui kept getting COVID. When they finally met in mid-June, the relationship escalated quickly. He called her "my princess" and "steve jobs" in the same conversation. He praised her: "you are smart competent hot" and "your only flaw is being too far away from me rn."

He was in Cambodia for his birthday (July 9). She sent him content while he recovered from being drunk.

The relationship was primarily physical from June through October 2024, but alongside the physical relationship, Gui was emotionally attentive in a way Amy needed. He offered to "hold space" for her emotional processing. He shared Bukowski poems. "there's so much space for bringing curiosity and exploration about your own mind." He told her he'd "gone through traumatic episodes myself."

The Suki Aftermath

July 25-26, 2024 was a turning point. Something traumatic happened to Amy — almost certainly the Suki rejection hitting hard (Suki had ended things July 18). Gui completely shifted registers:

"I also can hold space for either silence or sharing, depending on how you're feeling. I've gone through traumatic episodes myself and have seen friends go through it too… all to say that i see you, i care about you and will do my best to bring compassion and warmth."

His framework for emotional support:

"first, we find some comfort in the space around. then i listen to whatever comes out with care and compassion. finally i follow up with a question. repeat."

He shared: "in my own experience, retelling things over and over until you can tell it without any strong emotions is the way to go. i remember how much i sobbed like a baby the first time i told the story in detail to my best friend, now i can even smile telling it."

He offered his house when she needed space. He explicitly said: "no pressure to do anything romantically/physically."

The Philosophical Gui

October-November 2024 was peak intellectual connection. He sent long philosophy excerpts — including the Anthony de Mello passage about mechanical living and ego:

"Most people don't live aware lives. They live mechanical lives, mechanical thoughts—generally somebody else's—mechanical emotions, mechanical actions, mechanical reactions..."

November 15, 2024 — Gui's daily walk thought list:

"Today I walked and I thought about: 1) the scale of animal suffering, 2) being comfortable in change, 3) prison through relationships, 4) the need to say some things from a place of pain, 5) american imperialism, 6) AGI ethics, 7) the true value of soft skills, 8) resenting ketan, 9) the meaning of the segments in customer.io, 10) masked autoencoders."

He walks SF for hours, picking random Google Maps destinations. Watches sunset daily from Alamo Square. Lives in Ashbury Heights ("They're my people"). Sent burnout management notes from a guru. Shared Zhou Dynasty Wikipedia entries (to Amy, whose surname is Zhou). Texted from a Brazilian party about creating a "new alliance in the Brazilian community."

"I Hate All of Your Friends"

August 15, 2024, after attending a dinner: "by the way, I hate all of your friends. They're not nice people. Some of them are even addicted to cocaine." Said casually, possibly about the Taya/startup social circle. Gui was perceptive about Amy's environment even when he didn't know the full picture. This observation may have been early signal about the toxic world that would later consume her.

His Dad

Gui's parents are divorced. His dad is gay and has remarried a husband.

Transition to Platonic

By late November 2024, Gui sent Amy a message that formalized the emotional bond without the romantic/physical component:

"thank you my dear. i hope you realize that this goes much beyond physicality and sex. you're fundamentally just an amazing and very dear friend i have soooo much care for."

He described what she gave him:

"exploring sexuality / connecting intimately with someone / find ways to grow my compassion / giving me adventures. you helped me build this detached perspective on love and relationships, which is still very magical and caring."

Mental Health

In September 2025, Amy reached out to Gui about anxiety medication. He recommended ashwagandha and kava tea as natural alternatives. He shared his own experience with lorazepam and escitalopram (SSRI): "It's always important you find psychotherapy if you decide to take these meds. i say this not because of possible opioid addictions etc, but more because the medicine will be far more effective if it's embedded in a larger framework you're engaging with."

He had taken escitalopram for over a year and was fading off it. Gui was a source of mental health support during a period when Amy was falling apart at Taya.

January 2026 — The Clarification

When Amy reached out in January 2026, he was explicit:

"I wasn't hitting on you. I want us to be friends. ❤️"

She had suggested meeting up. He offered to "kick rocks at the Golden Gate Park." Then:

"I've been walking a lot over SF. I usually open Google Maps and pick a very distant spot I can walk many hours towards. I guess I just had the expectation I'd find you in the way, and have a random conversation to catch up. One time I thought I did, but it was someone similar."

In February 2026, Amy forwarded him a job posting at Fearn (AI patent startup, Noe Valley SF, $150-200k). As of March 2026, still casually in touch. Works in Sunnyvale.

Significance

3,083 messages. May 2024 to March 2026. In the romantic timeline, Gui is the transition between Suki (who rejected Amy in July 2024) and Nalin Semwal (who started texting in December 2024). What started as a Hinge hookup became something genuinely useful: emotional support, intellectual stimulation, and a clean exit into friendship.

His clean transition from FWB to friend (with explicit verbal clarity in January 2026) is rare — most such arrangements create resentment or awkward distance. Gui managed it with warmth.

No drama. No firing. No equity disputes. No one felt "made to feel like a fool." The cleanest ending of any significant relationship in Amy's documented life.
