Max

People

Max (full name: Maxwell) is a self-taught hacker, maker, and 3D-printing obsessive who met Amy on a dating app in October 2023. Phone: +1 (530) 304-1178. He lives in Davis, CA (530 area code), was born approximately August 2002 (~21 when they met), and works as a Technical Support engineer at Super Micro, debugging servers remotely. He's simultaneously taking community college classes (Calc 2, chemistry, physics) and grinding toward something bigger. By January 2026, he had started calling himself "a mechanical engineer!" — a self-determined title earned one 3D printer at a time.

He is Cambodian-American. His grandmother cooks Khmer food. He has family in Fresno (visited Thanksgiving 2025). He speaks some Chinese — writes 早安 (good morning), follows Xiaohongshu, asks Amy to translate things.

How They Met

First message: "It's max." October 11, 2023. Classic dating app number exchange. He starts flirting immediately: "Your cute enough to get low keyed married to," "I think I have a crush on you," "Meet me at the beach tomorrow." He takes a spontaneous drunken Uber trip to Santa Cruz with "birthday boy" and texts Amy at 5 AM saying he tried to photograph the sunrise for her but his phone died at the exact moment of the shot. He plans revolving sushi at Kura in Willow Glen.

The romantic energy dissolved into something more interesting: a creative friendship between two maker-types who exist in completely different worlds. Amy came from Stanford and Apple; Max came from a high school where he started a shoplifting business and taught himself CAD on 3D printers in his bedroom. On October 17, he confessed: "Ok I think I have a crush on you" — and then immediately continued: "I'm super into 3D printing." The moment where a romantic thing became a creative friendship instead.

Who He Is

Max has the hacker/tinkerer energy of someone who learned everything sideways — physics teacher mentioned Faraday cages, and Max built RFID blocking equipment. He found Nigerian scammers' IPs and got them on the phone. He runs a farm of 6+ 3D printers autonomously networked together (3x Ender 5s, CR10 Pro, SLA resin printer, Prusa MK4). He's building turret projects, ESP32 touchscreen alarm clocks, and robots with eyes that follow you.

He is also genuinely chaotic in a loveable way. He goes to anime conventions in cosplay (Fanime), got drunk and stole hot dogs and pizza from vendor tents, went to raves, took MDMA for the first time at Audien in downtown San Jose ("I was just in heaven for like 5 minutes... it was sublime"). He describes himself as someone who "love[s] breaking rules. Or ig, just trying to bypass systems. That's what got me into computers."

Music: Piano and guitar, mostly jazz improvisation. Favorite: Nujabes (Samurai Champloo OST). Also into lofi. Likes working late at night with music on.

Anime: Samurai Champloo (favorite, for the soundtrack), Death Note, Attack on Titan.

Self-awareness: "I like obsessing over people I barely know" and "I'm a clingy ass bitch sometimes." Past depression: "In the past I was pretty depressed." Now: "More stressed than depressed."

The Lore

"Bottle Joggers" was his high school business. He would wear a wig, dress nicely, get a shopping cart, LOAD it with bottles of alcohol from grocery stores, and "just casually walk out" to supply class parties. Organized, recurring, chaotic. When Amy asked about it, he described the whole operation with zero shame — the wig, the nice clothes for confidence, the calm walk past the registers. He felt "like Heisenberg."

RFID fabric experiment. His physics teacher Mr. Whitehall had a phone confiscation box lined with foil that blocked signals. Max asked: would RFID fabric block store security tags? He bought the fabric, went to Tommy Hilfiger, social-engineered the staff into letting him test it. No beep. The teacher connection to real-world hacking is very Max.

Hacked neighbor's WiFi to block porn on Sundays. His 15-year-old cousin was "super into hentai." Max hacked the WiFi, blocked every relevant domain on Sundays specifically. Cousin was furious. Max: "I find it so funny committing inconsequential crimes."

Reverse-phished Nigerian scammers. They tried to phish him. He found their IP address and called them, told them their location. They tried to recruit him for fraud against some guy in Sacramento — he had the victim's full SSN and bank info in front of him. He declined: "I like to steal shit but I don't fuck over random people."

Dating app strategy. Used Bumble travel mode to pre-match in Shanghai — building a WeChat network of 15+ future tour guides for planned world travel. He's playing long-term games.

Leaving Taya

In November 2025, when Amy was deciding whether to leave Taya, Max said what he'd been holding back: "I didn't want to say it when you were in town... that you should prolly leave the start up." He listed three numbered reasons:

  1. "I think the product sucks even if old lady investors give it money."
  2. "It seemed like it might affect your personal life and social which I think matters more."
  3. "The sooner the better, so that you're not so deep you can't pull out of something you dislike."

No Stanford diplomacy. No hedging. He called it. Amy said: "High key needed to hear that."

October 2025 — Mutual Breakdown at Philz Coffee

The most emotionally dense period. Max got broken up with in the middle of the night. Amy was leaving Taya. They both needed each other.

Oct 26: Max: "I just got broken up with in the middle of the night 😔." They agreed to meet the next day at Philz Coffee in Davis. Max: "I took a bunch of sleeping pills / Like for sleeping / Prolly gunna knock out soon." Amy: "We chat tomorrow buddy. Goodnight."

Oct 27: They met at Philz. After: Amy: "Thanks for hanging today / U a real ass homie to me" Max: "Your a real ass homie too / I felt a lot better after talking to you" Amy: "Me too / Glad we could help each other"

Then Amy confided she was about to tell someone about her Adderall addiction. Max gave nuanced, protective advice: "Idk if you should / I would just say overworked maybe." She disagreed — she wanted to be honest. Max: "Yeah just don't tell her over text / In case... But she doesn't seem like the kind of person to use that against you."

Oct 30: Amy: "I don't really wanna talk about tech since I quit." Max: "You quit?" Amy: "My startup." Max: "Was it graceful / Or messy." Amy: "It's okay / I'm just upset." Max: "Man / I feel for you / Sorry for you being upset."

January 2026 — SF Visit

Max drove from Davis to SF with his friend Margo. They walked Dolores Park. That night, Amy was upset about a fight with Nalin (about him being awkward in social situations). Max talked her through it: "It's not your job to do the socializing for him. / Does he beat himself up often? / I have a best friend like this."

He announced his new job: "Amy! I'm a mechanical engineer!" Amy: "OMGGGGG."

The ChatGPT Proxy Conversation

In November 2024, they had a genuinely strange and sweet meta-conversation where they made their ChatGPTs talk to each other as proxies: "Hey Max's ChatGPT..." / "Hey Amy's ChatGPT..." — comparing notes on how the AI interacts with each person. Funny, but also a little revealing about how they process their own personalities.

The Emotional Texture

Max and Amy don't have a conventional friendship — she's 25, Stanford + Apple, running startups; he's 21-22, community college, tech support at a server company. On paper they have no business being close. But the bond makes complete sense:

They share maker identity without performing it. Both are people whose hands have to be doing something. Amy built FineWoven iPhone cases and AI jewelry wearables. Max built 6 printers and reverse-phished hackers with his home network. Both stay up late doing deep technical work alone with lofi music on.

Max has no performance to keep up. He says "I'm failing everything so hard rn but it's 👌." He talks about how he used to steal things and he's not embarrassed. He describes his rave experience with genuine wonder. Amy, who was surrounded by optimized people in the a16z ecosystem, probably found this like oxygen.

He's functionally honest. When the Taya read came, it came clearly and without hedging. That's what Amy got from Max that she couldn't always get from her Stanford friends: the unvarnished take.

Max holds the rawest confidences — Adderall addiction, leaving Taya in real time, Nalin's social insecurity. He's the farthest from her Stanford/startup world, so there's less at stake to be vulnerable with him.
